Ulsan welcomes Daejeon to the tiger’s den to avenge the only blemish on its otherwise flawless season.
The Ulsan Hyundai Tigers will host the Daejeon Hana Citizens in the 15th round of the Hana One Q K League 2023 at 7 p.m. on Nov. 28 at Munsu Soccer Stadium.
With 14 matches played, Ulsan is at the top of the league with 12 wins, one draw and one loss for 37 points. They are 13 points ahead of second-placed FC Seoul, Jeju United, and Pohang Steelers (all on 24 points), but they are aiming to keep their guard up and continue their good form.
Ulsan has been waiting for the big game. On April 16, they lost 1-2 away from home. A win against Daejeon would have made K League history by extending their winning streak to seven games, the longest since the start of the league, but instead they suffered their first loss of the season. It was Ulsan’s only loss of the season. Ulsan is determined to get revenge against Daejeon when they return in 43 days.
That’s why Gwangyang’s return match was a victorious one, albeit in overtime. On April 24, Ulsan won the FA Cup fourth round (round of 16) against Jeonnam Dragons 2-1 in extra time to advance to the fifth round (quarterfinals). With six straight wins in the league and an official seven straight wins in the FA Cup, the defending K League champions are showing their power.
On this day, Ulsan focused on checking the performances of players who hadn’t played much and improving their physical condition. Yoon Il-Rok, Bojanic, Ataru, Kim Sung-Joon, Im Jong-Jong, Jung Seung-Hyun, and Kim Tae-Hwan were 스포츠토토 among those who took the field for the first time in a while.
Ulsan conceded an early goal to Jeonnam in the 18th minute of the second half, but the team responded with a high level of intensity, with Im Jong-soo scoring the equalizer in the middle of the opponent’s box in late stoppage time. In the first minute of stoppage time, Martin Adam finished off Bako’s cross to seal the win. Adam has now scored in his last three official matches, including two in the league, proving his in-form form.
Lee Chung-yong, Kim Young-kwon, Lee Kyu-sung, Park Yong-woo, and Lee Myung-jae were rested for the FA Cup tie. Uhm Won-sang was named to the reserve list but did not play. Kim Min-hyuk, Lee In-gyu, Bako, and Seol Young-woo came on as substitutes and played short minutes. The partial rotation for this match and the first leg was successful. After the game, head coach Hong Myung-bo said, “I don’t think it will affect the upcoming matches and games much,” despite the 120-minute battle.
It will be interesting to see if Ulsan can complete their revenge against Daejeon.
