I remember asking my uncle, ‘What’s that language,’ and ‘Who’s singing it?’ That’s how I got started.”
MLB.com reports that Peguero struggled to grasp the nuances of the language, but after hearing a 50 Cent song for the first time, he was determined to keep learning. Now he’s comfortable enough with English to speak to the media in English. Peguero joked that he tried to remember only the good words in the song lyrics, not the profanity. His favorite artists include rappers Young Thug and Lil Baby, along with 50 Cent.
Peguero’s message is clear. “One of the things I always say is that if you really want something, you work for it. You have to be patient,” he says. “You have to believe that you can make it happen. I think the most important thing is not to give up.”
